So I don’t know if it was just because the story felt so formulaic or if it was because I just didn’t feel sympathy for the main character like you’re supposed to. ![]() I did get choked up a little bit at the end, but nothing like what other readers had described. I had heard of people sobbing over this book and how it completely changed their lives, but for me this book unfolded pretty much the way I expected it to. It just didn’t blow me away like I expected. It’s definitely the sort of book I would pick to read for myself, even without all of the recommendations. The first scene aside, I think the rest of the sex scenes were BRILLIANT! Katee Robert handled the CNC relationship pretty well, in my opinion. I understand some suspension of belief has to occur with romance (especially dark romance) but if you expect me to believe that this cis man could truly understand that Jasmine wanted to have sex with him when she repeatedly said no, that’s not happening. I understand the sexual relationship they have is a consensual non-consensual one (CNC), however, they did not have an actual conversation prior to the first sex scene. In short, Jasmine was a bad bitch! My only qualm is the first opening scene. ![]() There is a scene in here that vividly reminded me of a scene in the show Reign where Mary Queen of Scots walks into her castle covered in her enemy's blood.
